The Sunshine Coast Nighttime Economy - What's Really Going On

Dr Lenny Vance, from UniSC presented the findings of a recent study looking into the night-time economy of the Sunshine Coast. Along with insights captured from industry practitioners, the UniSC study explored resident and visitor perceptions and behaviours around night-time outings in the region.
So, what's really going on in the nighttime economy? Overall, perceptions amongst our residents surveyed were mostly neutral, that is, not overly positive or negative. There were stronger positive perceptions for our cafes and restaurants. Baby Boomers agreed most strongly with the vibrancy and quality of our local scene while Generations X & Y were the most critical. Visitors across all generational cohorts tended to be more positive about the Sunny Coast scene. Whereas, the importance, value of and need for more night-time entertainment opportunities was strongly supported across all generations and particularly by Gen X.
A majority of residents surveyed agreed (median = 3.74/5) that there should be more night-time entertainment on the Sunshine Coast and that it is important (median = 3.97/5) especially for attracting and retaining workers as well as tourists.
Another interesting statistic revealed was that Generation Y residents spend on average $233 on a night out!
The findings were discussed by a panel of industry representatives including Kris Stewart - CEO of Qmusic, Scott Hoskings - owner of Junk restaurants and President of the Maroochydore Safe Night Precinct Committee and Chris Hignett – owner/operator of The Station.
There were also robust discussions amongst the 98 industry peeps in attendance at the Innovation Centre as well as an enthralling aerial acrobatics display by local performer Lilakoi.
